Upper
Eyelid Blepharoplasty Surgery
Aging
of the Upper Eyelids:
Over time, the upper eyelids begin to
sag, droop, and appear puffy, due to fat deposits and loss of skin elasticity.
Drooping eyelids is due to several factors (sun damage, genetics, smoking and
alcohol), which contribute to destroy the youthful look of the upper eyelid. Initially,
the upper eyelid may become puffy eliminating the ability to put on eyeliner.
As women & men continue to age, the loose skin will hang down over the eye
obstructing vision. The correction of this is an upper lid blepharoplasty to remove
the skin and, if present, the fat which forms bags in the corners of the eyes.
Cosmetic
upper eyelid surgery, also known as Blepharoplasty, eyelid lift, or eye lift is
performed to provide the patient with a smoother, more youthful and well-rested
appearance in the eyes & eyelids. Blepharoplasty is the process of very carefully
removing excess skin and fat from around the eyes to produce a dramatically more
youthful appearance.
Blepharoplasty
(eyelid surgery) is the second most commonly performed cosmetic plastic surgery
procedure after liposuction. Over 200 thousand eyelift procedures were reported
in 2005. One of the reason the eyelid lift procedure is so popular is because
it is a smaller surgical procedure that does not take a great amount of time and
causes little discomfort, yet can provide significant benefit.
Blepharoplasty
eyelid surgery is ofter done either on the upper eyelid, the Lower eyelid or both.
The
Upper Eyelid Lift Procedure
Excess
skin in the upper eyelid is carefully measured and marked after being cleaned
with an antiseptic solution. Local anesthesia is injected to numb the area and
to limit bleeding. A strip of skin is removed along with a strip of eyelid muscle.
In some patients the eyelid muscle is preserved for a more natural look. Fat pockets
are then dissected and excess fat removed. If the eyelid is droopy (ptosis), a
repair can be completed at this time. Following a short healing period of 3 days
the sutures are removed. After a few weeks of healing the scars become imperceptible.
Complications are rare and can include over tightening of the lid skin, bleeding,
and incomplete removal of fat. Incisions for upper eyelid surgery are usually
made in the natural crease of the eyelid and is barely perceptible.
