Lower
Eyelid Blepharoplasty Surgery
Aging
of the Lower Eyelids:
Over time, the Lower eyelids often become
puffy or baggy and dark circles appear. A
person who has pockets of fat, excess skin or muscle beneath the lower eyelids
is a candidate for Lower Eyelid Surgery. An
interesting problem seen in women in their 20's is the build up of fat in the
lower eyelids producing "bags" under the eyes . These bags are actually
pockets of fat that pooch out against the lower eyelid. Removal
or re-positioning of fat beneath the eyes, along with removal of excess skin can
eliminate the puffiness, and bags.
Cosmetic
lower eyelid surgery, also known as Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty. By making an
incision on the inside of the eyelid, fat & excess skin can be removed in
a very simple manner thereby safely restoring the natural contour of the lower
eyelid.
Lower
eyelid blepharoplasty can make a remarkable difference in the appearance of the
face, alleviating the appearance of tiredness and old age by eliminating the excess,
wrinkly skin beneath the eyes. The eyes appear fresher and more youthful, and
the results may last for many years. The degree of improvement varies from patient
to patient.
The
Lower Eyelid Lift Procedure
Preoperative
evaluation includes amount of skin and fat as well as evaluating the elasticity
of the lower lid by performing a snap back test. For laxity of the
lower lid a canthopexy or canthoplasty may be needed. Following cleansing with
an antiseptic, local anesthesia is injected. An incision is made 2-3 mm from the
lash line and a flap is developed. Incisions for lower eyelid Blepharoplasty are
usually made below the lashline. Sometimes the procedure calls for incisions to
be made inside the lower eyelid, leaving no visible scars. In this instance, dissolvable
sutures may be used. Excess skin is removed followed by removal of fat from all
3 pockets. Sometimes fat is preserved and rolled under the nasojugal groove. Following
the surgery one should keep their head elevated and ice the lower lids for the
first day. Sutures are removed after 2-3 days and recovery is very quick.
